LOS ANGELES COUNTY — October 26, 2026. A 4.08-mile stretch of West Manchester Avenue from South Van Ness Avenue to Compton Avenue has been designated a State Priority Safety Corridor. The route crosses South Los Angeles and the unincorporated community of Florence-Firestone.

What the designation means for residents

State and local transportation agencies will use the corridor to focus on preventing crashes that kill or seriously injure people walking, cycling, driving and using public transportation. Possible measures include safer crossings, protected bicycle facilities, curb extensions, pedestrian refuge islands, better road markings, speed-feedback signs and enforcement focused on the most dangerous driving behaviors.

The announcement does not establish that all these features are already installed on West Manchester Avenue. Specific construction schedules, designs and funding commitments must be confirmed separately with the agencies responsible for each segment.

Why the county is involved

Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell described the project as part of the county’s Vision Zero work and cited efforts to improve West Manchester Avenue and Firestone Boulevard for all road users. The inclusion of unincorporated Florence-Firestone means county jurisdiction is particularly relevant, alongside work within the City of Los Angeles.

California’s selection methodology drew on fatal and serious-injury collision data from 2020 through 2024. The new corridor is one part of the state’s broader goal to cut severe crashes by 30% by 2035.
