LOS ANGELES — November 5, 2026. Los Angeles drivers are entering a new era of automated speed enforcement. LADOT began activating the first cameras on October 26 and says more locations will be activated through the end of 2026. A camera’s initial 60-day period is for warnings, not automatic monetary citations, giving motorists a chance to adjust before fines begin at that location.

What triggers a notice?

According to LADOT, the system targets a vehicle traveling at least 11 miles per hour over the posted limit. After the 60-day warning period for a particular camera, citations will begin at $50, with penalties increasing for more serious speeding. Because camera installation and activation dates vary, a warning period that applies to one location may not match the timeline at another.

Where are the cameras?

The city publishes a camera-location list by council district and status information through its Speed Safety System page. Motorists can use it to check their usual streets, but the most reliable approach remains to observe the posted speed limit on every road, including school and neighborhood streets.

Privacy and the stated purpose

The city says the pilot aims to curb serious traffic injuries and deaths and is designed to capture license plate information needed for enforcement, not motorists’ faces. City transportation officials say revenue from eventual citations will help fund street-safety work. The program’s performance will need evaluation against actual safety outcomes, not simply the number of mailed notices.
