EARLIER WEDNESDAY MORNING COUNT.

LOS ANGELES — November 4, 2026, Wednesday-morning update. The close City Council contest in District 3 now shows Timothy Gaspar ahead of Barri Girvan by 823 votes, according to the updated NBC Los Angeles election report. The earlier version of this story reported a 45-vote margin from a smaller overnight ballot snapshot.

District 3 numbers

The latest displayed tally is 25,000 votes for Gaspar (50.84%) and 24,177 votes for Girvan (49.16%). The current margin is 823 votes. The race is to replace departing Councilmember Bob Blumenfield, with voters in Council District 3 selecting a district representative, not a citywide officeholder.

Why vote counts change

At an earlier point in the night Gaspar led by just 45 votes, 20,156 to 20,111. The county received and tabulated additional voting-center ballots, increasing both candidates’ totals and changing the margin. Later valid mail and provisional ballots may also change the results during canvassing.

What the council seat does

The District 3 member helps decide Los Angeles municipal budgets, services, zoning and other policy, while representing the district’s neighborhoods on the City Council. The outcome is separate from the mayoral contest and Los Angeles Countywide offices.
